Hvb "Arnt Karlsen"

Union Whalings hvalbåt “Arnt Karlsen” on the way out from Durban at the start of the Antarctic season. This was a modern catcher with excellent seaworthiness who caught for the digester “Abraham Larsen”, between the Antarctic seasons caught the Union Whaling land stations in Durban.

Union Whaling

Union Whaling land station by “the Bluff” close Durban. This station was closed in 1974/75 and all operations after this was taken over by United Whaling newly refurbished Premier Drive.

W.R. Strang

Union Whalings hvalbåt W.R. Strang, a converted Korvette purchased for Durban 1948.
 
 

The W.R. Strang was our fasted and longest range catcher. She would leave Durban, as seen in the photo, and go down to the whaling grounds about a week ahead of the factory ship to find the best area in the Southern Ocean to start whaling.

Catchers in circulation

Union Whaling catchers laid on the docks in Durban. Whaling boat Wilfrid Fearnhead leftmost. This was built in Norway in 1948 and sold to the Union Whaling. I 1970 she was sold to Cheynes Beach Whaling Co. and renamed Cheynes IV. She remained there until the company laid up in 1978. Now she is on land in the museum park Whale World outside Albany.
