Avalanche in Leith Harbor 1929

15. august 1929 , part of the originating station in Leith Harbor destroyed by a large avalanche. Three workers were killed. These three were Uli Johanessen, Anders Jørgensen and Johan Herman Gøtz.
Johan Herman Gotz would spend the winter in order to put capable equipment for upcoming season. He worked during the meal break, while most others sat in the cafeteria when the avalanche came. This was Johans first and last trip on whaling. He left behind a wife and two sons, respectively. 2 and 7 year.

Salvesens transportskip SS Southern Opal and SS Southern Opal ved kai i Leith Harbour. In the foreground you can see the range Jericho where the old station was. The station was hit by an avalanche in 1929 where three men were killed. After this it was decided to move the station to the place where it lies in this picture.
