Flk "Southern Queen"

Hoisting the tail onto the meat deck, South Shetlands.
Before the stern ramp was invented (the first ship to feature a stern ramp was the Ds/Flk «Lancing») whales were flensed alongside the factory ships. This required fair weather and was a dangerous job. Huge pieces of blubber and other parts of the whale were hoisted onto the ship above the heads of the flensers.

Removing the blubber

Removing the blubber

Removing the blubber. When this has been completed, the body will be towed aft to the meat-deck.
This is from an album of photographs that were all taken by J.S. Hodgson in the same season onboard the «Southern Queen».
